The MOFW is an organization of men and women who embrace the stated purposes and the Principals of the Order which include a firm belief and trust in Almighty God and true allegiance to the United States of America. It is a confederation of State Commanderies and also embraces “Companions at Large,” who are currently assigned to the District of Columbia Commandery. The Order welcomes new members who need to be proposed and seconded by members of the Order.
The Order includes both men and women who have actively served during a foreign war as well as the descendants of those who served. This combination of service as well as descent is unique among lineage organizations and emphasizes the inclusion of family members of those not only who served but also accepted the responsibilities of commissioned service. The Judge Advocate General of the MOFW has rendered an opinion that adopted persons are included as lineal descendants.
This website provides an introduction to our Order. It reminds us of the purposes of our Order since it was founded in New York in 1894 and instituted nationally in 1896. It provides a brief historical perspective as well as membership information and procedures. It also includes ordering procedures for medals and other items with the MOFW logo. Please view the site for new information including recent newsletters and activities.
The National Order provides awards for our Service Academies and meets biennially in Convention. The Proceedings from the Conventions provide a unique perspective on the history of the Order and the extraordinary dedication of our National and State leaders over the years. The internet can provide an inexpensive way to share this history with our Companions.
I encourage a “back to basics” approach to membership growth to reverse the decline in recent years. Please review our Purposes carefully and embrace their implementation. The States can strengthen the ties of fellowship and the National Order can “honor and perpetuate the names of brave and loyal men and women” and to “keep in mind the memory of their martial deeds and the victories which they helped gain.” These purposes require time, effort and money which we encourage our Companions to provide.
It is my privilege to serve as Commander-General of our Order. I welcome your suggestions and participation in our Order. You may contact me directly at Commander@mofwus.org.
Fraternally,
